The Nissan Altima Hybrid’s powertrain remains unchanged. The 2.5-liter inline-four gasoline engine generates 158 horsepower and 168 pound-feet of torque and works in concert with an electric motor that produces 40 horsepower and 199 pound-feet of torque from 0 to 1500 rpm. That’s a net total of 198 horsepower and 261 pound-feet, and a smidge more power than the Fusion Hybrid, although Hyundai says the 2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid will boast a class-leading 209 total horsepower.

Thanks to the Altima Hybrid’s engine is mated with a continually variable transmission (CVT) that is smooth and rapid or annoyingly linear, depending on how you feel about a CVT. The hybrid can access up to 250 pound-feet of total torque at diesel-esque low range of 1000-1500 rpm, and when pressed it will move out briskly.

Speaking of electric, Nissan says the Altima hybrid can reach speeds of up to 40 mph on straight electric power alone, and we were able to achieve that several times. This was on flat surfaces only; the engine thrummed to gasoline mode at the slightest incline. The Altima Hybrid is rated at 35 city/33 highway mpg.
